Head of Risk / OEM Lending

Location: San Francisco preferred; open to remote

Compensation: $240,000–$270,000 base + 0.5–1.5% equity + benefits

We’re looking for a founding risk leader to design and own the credit engine for an untapped vertical from the ground up. This role blends deep underwriting expertise with strong quantitative judgment and the ability to translate risk policy into systems that can scale.

You’ll work with the CEO, capital providers, and engineering to set the core approach to decisioning, monitoring, and portfolio performance, using both traditional borrower signals and differentiated, asset-backed inputs.

Why consider this role

  • You want to create credit products that expand access while maintaining disciplined risk.

  • You want broad ownership and influence over strategy, systems, and team.

  • You value craftsmanship and high standards, and you prefer environments that avoid “good enough.”

  • You want to build alongside a small, experienced team and help shape culture early.

What you will do

  • Define and iterate credit policy, eligibility criteria, and exception frameworks.

  • Build risk and pricing logic across multiple products and customer segments.

  • Partner with engineering to implement decisioning and monitoring in production software.

  • Establish performance measurement, loss forecasting, and portfolio governance.

  • Support capital markets and lender diligence with clear model documentation and reporting.

  • Hire and mentor an early risk and analytics team.

What we are looking for

  • Extensive experience (typically 12+ years) in credit underwriting, risk management, and/or model development in consumer or small business lending.

  • Hands-on experience building models or decisioning frameworks end-to-end.

  • Experience steering a portfolio through stress periods and making principled tradeoffs.

  • Ability to communicate and defend methodologies to external partners (lenders, investors, auditors, and regulators).

  • Strong quantitative foundation and comfort working with data and ambiguity.

  • Strong technical fluency and proven collaboration with engineering teams.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision

  • Flexible time off
